The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. – Psalm 29:4
As I sat in the dark with no electricity, listening to the thunder rumble and watching the lightning flash, I thought about God’s power. I pondered how in a flash life changes. This life is temporary and fragile, and it can be gone in a second. I also thought about how Mighty God is!
My heart desired to be with my grandma as she neared her time to go home, but I could not go until the storm passed. I was not sure if that would be too late. Nevertheless, I knew if I didn’t make it, I had said goodbye to her already. We assured her over the past several days that it was okay to go home. Jesus was waiting for her.
I often wonder if we stop enough to think about the frailty of life. Nobody likes to. I don’t. However, it proves essential to realize life is just that. When we understand that reality, we are more useful for Christ. We understand the urgency of doing things for His honor and glory. We stop wasting time.
But I say, brethren, time is short . . . – 1 Corinthians 7:29a
My pastor preached last night about rebellion in sin. He touched on many areas that we rebel in daily actions. One that hit home with me is the fact of wasting time. I know lately I have done a lot of that! I do not need to be on Facebook as much as I am. I do not need to spend so much time emailing and texting. I do use these tools to encourage others and spread God’s Word, but I also use it to socialize way too much! That is merely one of many examples.
Our short life is not for us. It is for the use of Christ and His glory. Don’t get me wrong; He wants us to have a good life. The problem is we often don’t because of our choices. He knows exactly what should be, but we seem to believe we know better. We don’t! Let me assure you, we don’t! We were made in the likeness of God, and our purpose is to glorify our Lord. It is our mission to win people to Christ. So often we miss the mark on the most important mission given to us!
The fruit of righteousness is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise. – Proverbs 11:30
I often hear people talk about how life is short, and we should live it up. Many interpret that as an excuse to delve head first into wicked sin: drunkenness, fornication, adultery, sodomy, etc…. In reality, we should live it up – FOR CHRIST! We should live it up with the Great Commission!
I have thought a lot about regrets and how I have wasted valuable time, so many things I wish I never did. I spent so many years going in and out of bars; I spent so much time “hanging out” and not doing anything productive at all. I think about the money wasted at the casinos; I think about the people I should have spent more time with but didn’t. I think about the lost souls I never spoke to about Christ nor gave a tract.
Regrets do not stem from God; I realize this. We can’t change our pasts. We can only work on the present and future, and that is all God expects us to do once we repent. He will help us with the parts that are hard. He knows our weaknesses and struggles. He knows where we lack and fills those holes with His strength and power (when we let him).
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. – James 1:5
Think about that as you go through your day. Let’s not focus on tomorrow but what we can do for Christ in the now! Tomorrow is not guaranteed, so right now is the time to serve and obey!
